Tinnitus
Tinnitus is the term used for hearing noises in the ears that are not
present in the environment. These noises are usually described as
‘buzzing’, ‘humming’ and ‘roaring’. Many people experience tinnitus
temporarily after they have attended a concert or listened to a loud
band. However, about 15% of the population experience tinnitus
regularly or continuously and 1–2% suffer to such an extent that it
interferes with their sleep, their ability to concentrate and get on
with every day activities. The factors that cause tinnitus are unique
for each individual, but tinnitus generally arises from exposure to
loud noise, hearing loss, or middle ear infections. Some people with
tinnitus experience no evident hearing loss or infection.
